How to make perfect seals

2008 July 31

A few Etsy users have been asking me how to make seals, so I’m posting the instructions here with pictures. Enjoy :)

I elaborate

…in the letters of the word

and       the least

loop of the letters

- Jean Cocteau

1. Lightly wipe seal with vegetable oil to prevent it from sticking to the wax.

2. Using an automatic grill lighter, angle the top end of the wax stick to the flame, over the spot where you wish to position your seal. (Avoid holding the stick directly overhead the flame, as the wax may overheat.)

4. Let the melted wax form a round puddle about the size of the seal head.

5. Wait 10 to 15 seconds before pressing the seal. Then gently remove it with a rocking motion.

6. If the seal gets stuck wait for it to cool and it will come away cleanly.

7. f you’re not happy with your first attempt, re-melt the wax on the paper over a metal spoon (cover the handle with a cloth!) and start over.

It will get easier with practice )

For best results avoid using waxy or glossy papers. Vellums and linens work best.
